WHY SHOULD I ATTEND THIS CAREER FAIR?
Career fairs are excellent opportunities for students and recent alumni to make employer contacts and gather employer information. Employers use career fairs to increase awareness of their companies, and distribute career information, identify potential candidates for internship and professional opportunities. The job market is getting better, but these companies want what Newark universities and colleges have to offer! Use your winter break to get ready!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THIS FAIR?
During a career fair, each organization is assigned to a table for displaying promotional material and company information. A representative is available to answer questions and provide information about career opportunities. Extended formal interviews do not occur during a career fair, although a positive interaction between student and representative may lead to an interview in the future.

HOW DO I MAKE THIS CAREER FAIR WORTHWHILE FOR ME?
Do all the steps listed below and you will be extremely confident and well-prepared for this career fair!

HOW CAN I PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME?
Use this checklist:
Create a professional resume that features your skills, accomplishments, and strengths. Resources for resume writing are available in your Office of Career Services.
Plan to have your resume reviewed by a Career Advisor in advance of the career fair.
Most career offices will be open from January 5 onwards. Check with your school’s center.
Prepare at least 15-25 copies of your resume to distribute during the fair.
Review the list of attending employers
and identify those looking for candidates with your qualifications (See next FAQ).
Research the employers you are interested in and prepare a short list of questions. Prepare specific questions based on your research -- employers are not impressed with the question “so, what does your company do”? You might ask about desirable personal qualities and necessary technical skills to work at X company.
VERY IMPORTANT! Prepare a one-minute introduction about yourself to use when you meet the company representative. In addition to stating your name, school and major, your introduction should express why you are interested in the field or organization and briefly relate your background to what you know about the employer’s needs.
Practice your introduction until you feel comfortable with it.
Check out your interview outfit and make sure it is ready: clean suit, shined shoes, appropriate accessories.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH COMPANIES WANT SOMEONE WITH MY QUALIFICATIONS?
Our website will list companies that seek to hire students/alumni in your major in the Participating Organizations section. The website will be updated with information such as MAJORS SOUGHT, TYPES OF POSITIONS, SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS. When you arrive at the fair, you will also be given a booklet that will identify the types of jobs and candidates each company is seeking.

WHAT SHOULD I DO DURING THE CAREER FAIR?
Before you enter the career fair, take a few minutes to review the employer booklet for more information or additional employers. Highlight and prioritize those you are most interested in so you can use your time efficiently. Dress and act like a professional. To increase your professional appearance, replace your backpack with a nicer bag, folder or briefcase.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN MEETING WITH AN EMPLOYER?
Use your best social skills to show positive interest and enthusiasm. Smile, offer a firm handshake, and use good eye contact. Speak clearly and concisely, and do your best to appear confident and relaxed. Company representatives are usually very friendly and outgoing, so they will be a receptive and supportive audience. In addition to asking questions about what the company can do for you, make sure you focus on what you can offer the company.

Your skills, qualifications, and personal qualities should be included in your introduction and in the answers to questions posed by the company representative. Be mindful that others want to meet with the employer and that you only have 2-5 minutes to sell yourself. Be aware of cues from the employer that it is time to move on. Before you wrap-up your discussion with the representative, offer your resume and request a business card. Thank him or her, and collect company literature to take with you.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER THE CAREER FAIR?
Follow-up is a very important but often overlooked step in the process of making a career fair work for you. Be prompt and pro-active with your follow-up. Immediately after the fair, write down notes about the companies and your conversations with the representatives. Use your notes to write or email individualized thank-you notes to each representative. Reiterate your interest in the company, and either include another copy of your resume or mention your relevant skills and experience in the text of the letter.

MAY I COME “DRESSED-DOWN” IF I AM NOT INTENDING TO TALK TO ANY OF THE RECRUITERS, BUT JUST WANT TO LOOK AROUND?
Absolutely not. This event is intended to be professional and the overall dress of the student/alumni attendees must adhere to the high standards requested. Students/alumni not adhering to these standards will not be permitted to enter.

HOW DO I GET THERE AND WHERE CAN I PARK?
See the Parking and Directions section of this website. We strongly urge all students to utilize their usual campus parking and walk to the Robert Treat Hotel (15 minutes maximum from each campus) if the weather permits, or to use public transportation to Newark’s Penn Station. Alumni should utilize the parking garages listed on this website.

WILL THERE BE A COAT CHECK AT THE HOTEL?
Yes, the Robert Treat Hotel will have a coat check available for coats and backpacks so you do not have to carry these around at the hotel.

STUDENTS & ALUMNI: On-line registration will be available prior to the event date.
